UFC news, rumors: Confirmed fights for 2022, Conor McGregor potential next fight, Jones vs. Ngannou is unlikely.

LAS VEGAS, NV. – -- The UFC had a dramatic visit to Anaheim for UFC 270 last week as UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou defended his belt in a unanimous decision win over UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane. The promotion is looking to keep the momentum rolling into the Lone Star State for when Israel Adesanya defends his UFC Middleweight strap against a familiar foe in Robert Whittaker at UFC 271.

The UFC has had many contract disputes and controversies over the past few weeks. Yet there have been major announcements regarding potential fights, with some already being confirmed and put on fight cards.

Main Event Switch up for UFC 272/273:

UFC 272 at T-Mobile Arena, LV, was supposed to include a main event between UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski defending his belt in a trilogy bout with Former UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway.

One day after the fight was confirmed, Holloway was forced to pull out of the fight due to injury. Holloway, fresh off a win against up and comer Yair Rodriguez, will look to see if he is in the title picture when he is healthy. Holloway has been seen exchanging blows with former UFC champion Conor McGregor recently on Twitter, a fight he has stated he would love to run back.

Volkanovski will now fight the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung as the headliner for UFC 273, location TBD.

Former UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington and BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal will now headline UFC 272 in what will be one of the biggest grudge matches in the promotion's history.

The former best friends and now bitter rivals used to live in the same house together in their younger years. Both of them used to train together at the renowned gym American Top Team. This matchup between two top-5 welterweights will be one of the most exciting matchups of the year as they both look to keep their name in UFC Welterweight title contention.

Conor McGregor next fight:

Conor McGregor has not been silent on Twitter since suffering his second consecutive loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. He has been calling out shots to seemingly every top fighter in the lightweight and welterweight division.

McGregor seemed adamant that he would be the next in line for a title shot against UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira. This seemed like an outlandish statement given the fact that McGregor is 1-3 in his last four UFC fights. Oliveira has recently signed a contract to fight former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion and #1 contender Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.

McGregor has been rumored to be fighting a plethora of opponents. UFC President Dana White has said that McGregor is “looking great” and should be expected back in the third quarter of 2022. A few potential opponents being talked about have been Nate Diaz, Michael Chandler, and Tony Ferguson. Yet with McGregor, you never know if he will be thrown into a title shot.

Jon Jones vs. Francis Ngannou off:

What seemed like the obvious fight to make, is now a long shot from happening. Jon Jones is looking to make his much-anticipated debut at heavyweight in the first quarter of 2022. This was supposed to be against the winner of Ngannou vs. Gane. But with Francis Ngannou now needing surgery and his ongoing contract dispute with Dana White, this fight seems unlikely in the near future.

Another interim belt may need to be used with Ngannou’s latest injury. Expect a UFC Interim Heavyweight title match with Stipe Miocic, Ciryl Gane, or Jon Jones main eventing the show.
